Begin with the packed product—not a preferred lid
An early brief should identify what is being packed, the maximum product dimensions and mass, whether the paper can is primary or secondary packaging, how fragile the contents are, and how often the user needs to open it. A perfume bottle, a whisky bottle, a silk scarf and a dry food product can all fit inside a round tube, but they do not create the same protection, access or compliance problem.
Facts to confirm before a route is frozen
- Product envelope: maximum diameter or width, height, mass and any protruding parts.
- Packaging role: direct contact, secondary protection, presentation pack or shipping component.
- Access pattern: one-time opening, repeated opening, display opening or tamper-evident access.
- Protection need: impact, abrasion, light, moisture, aroma, leakage or insert retention.
- Commercial context: target market, channel, expected quantity, timing and cost priority.
The three starting structure families

For a nested two-piece can, the lower base may use two board layers while the upper part of the inner tube continues as one layer. A one-layer lid then sleeves over the inner tube. The closed pack may show no neck, or it may intentionally expose a controlled band. That visible neck is an engineered artwork surface, not an accidental gap.
Closure choice changes the structure record
A paper-flat end, an inner-curl end, a removable tinplate lid and a composite peel-seal are not interchangeable styling options. They change the end geometry, access experience, printable areas and the dimensions carried into the dieline and 3D model. An optional plastic or paper overcap can add another controlled component rather than replace the primary closure definition.
Geometry must use one source of truth
Folvar records outer diameter, inner diameter, finished closed height, board layers, closure depths, lid depth, nesting clearance and visible-neck height as linked parameters. Paper and board thickness should be measured consistently; grammage is a separate material property and should not be used as a substitute for caliper. For a round body, the approved circumference is derived from the approved outer diameter with π, then the paste zone and bleed are added as separate production allowances.
A decision sequence that keeps the project reversible
Recommended order
- 1. Record confirmed product facts and visibly mark assumptions.
- 2. Compare only feasible structure and closure families.
- 3. Confirm the geometry and opening state with an engineering view.
- 4. Generate a version-linked dieline with every printable surface.
- 5. Develop artwork inside that geometry and preserve the front-centre reference.
- 6. Approve mapped proofs before producing renders or interactive 3D.
What remains a project decision
Standard families make an early recommendation possible, but they do not remove project review. Tooling availability, exact clearances, board caliper, insert design, closure compatibility, required tests, regulatory copy and production tolerance still need the relevant human approval. If these facts are unknown, the brief should show an AI suggestion or an open question—not silently convert it into a customer fact.
